I have been constantly amazed during my first year in Los Angeles how virtually everyone I have met—from students, instructors, and campus colleagues, to community and business leaders—has some connection to and a very positive impression of UCLA Extension. To celebrate our 90th anniversary of extending the excellence of UCLA throughout the Los Angeles region, we launched a special website to capture memories from our students called Your Story is Our Story.
One of our past students that we feature is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The governor is just one of millions of individuals whose lives have been positively impacted by UCLA Extension’s special brand of openly accessible, flexible, relevant, high-quality lifelong learning.Other stories are equally intriguing, written by students past and present:
A leading interior designer who completed Extension’s Interior Design Certificate Program 20 years ago went on to a successful career, including being ranked as one of the “100 Hotel and Restaurant Design Giants” by Interior Design Magazine.
A stay-at-home mom with a passion for archaeology who completed Extension’s Archaeology Certificate Program continued her education with a PhD degree and now oversees an archive at UCLA.
A UCLA maintenance employee who is learning English through Extension’s American Language Center so she can help her daughters with their homework and encourage them to follow in their older sister’s footsteps as a first generation college student at UC.
A pastry chef who enrolled in writing courses at Extension has authored no fewer than five cookbooks—with two more on the way.
An engineer seeking a career change who, after completing screenwriting courses at Extension, sold her first screenplay and was nominated for a 2007 Academy Award.
A 90-year-old member of The PLATO Society of UCLA who attends courses weekly and coordinates discussion groups, continues to stretch and expand her mind.
And you. I’m confident you have your own UCLA Extension story—or will very soon.I invite you to visit the Your Story is Our Story website, browse the archives, and add your own personal story to our growing number of responses.
At UCLA Extension, our mission is to provide knowledge and connections for people to achieve their personal and professional goals. We have been devoted to that goal for 90 years. We look forward to continuing to catalyze learning and change among the dynamic individuals, communities, and businesses of the Los Angeles region for at least the next 90 years as well.
Wishing you all the best,
Cathy Sandeen, Dean
